These were the treasured moments.

The soft tapping of keys on a laptop drifted through the downstairs rooms, echoing in a quiet way off the tiles. There was no screaming, for once, no fighting over mundane things like the remote. No whining—what’s for dinner? Can I have some chocolate? —Or anything else of that kind. Just the sound of the keyboard and Joey’s gentle snoring from the couch. The house had been cleaned, also. The carpet was vacuumed, immaculate white instead of cream-yellow. And the rug was gone.

Seto listened to the silence with a smile, closing the door behind him as he entered the house, a mansion to most people. He slid his shoes of in the doorway, padding gently down the hallway, hoping not to disturb his brother for fear of starting the noise again. He settled quietly on his bed, and closed his eyes. He breathed in the smell of cleaning chemicals, the citrus smell a nice change from the rising damp and dust.

These were the quiet moments, few and far between, and he treasured them almost as much as he treasured the noise.
