Summer was not Parker’s favourite time of year by a long shot. There was almost always the smell of something burning in the distance, flies hung around everywhere and the air was thick and heavy and dry. The heat wasn’t nice either. This particular Saturday of summer, he was reclining in a plastic chair out the front of a café with his hands wrapped around a glass of iced water. His friend and business partner, Chris, sat across the table from him in a similar position, staring fixedly at the number card on the table. Parker raised an eyebrow, and asked, “What are you thinking about?”
Chris looked up and blinked. “Huh? Oh… I was just thinking that we need a vacation.”
“A vacation?” Parker took a sip of his drink, not looking away from his friend.
“Yeah. A vacation. I mean we’ve certainly—” A vespa sped past, and Chris swerved in his chair to follow it. It was red and shiny and the girl on the back clutching at the driver had long wavy hair and a soft leather jacket. A few moments later it was lost from sight, in amongst the throngs of people and the crushes of cars.
Parker smirked. “Chris, if you want a motorbike you could just try asking.”
“Me. A motorbike?” Chris’s face scrunched up. “You must be kidding. You know that the things scare the hell out of me.”
“I also know that you’d absolutely love to learn to ride one and have wanted to since you were five. I also know that you are such a chicken that you couldn’t even work up the courage to take a ride on the back of your aunt’s bike around the block when she offered. To this day, you space out and practically start drooling whenever one goes past.” Seeing his friend’s face, Parker held up his hand. “Don’t argue, it’s pointless and only serves to make you seem stupid. Now, what was this about a vacation?”
“Well, I think we’ve earned one. And I know that we’ve got enough money saved up for a nice one somewhere, so don’t try and get out of it like that. And it’ll just be you and me so you also can’t use the socializing excuse. Also, I know that you secretly like beaches so if you even think about feeding me some lie about the sand and sun and surf I’ll start packing as soon as we get home.” Parker closed his mouth, which he had just opened, and looked somewhat sheepish at this last point. “Now, I’ve been thinking about this for a while, so I now know that we can certainly afford to close the shop for a week or two, that we don’t have any appointments made from the first of January until mid-February, and that you’re honestly getting really bored with tarot cards and would rather get back to basics with runes and cartomancy.”
“Chris,” Parker said, “If I agree to a vacation will you stop talking?”
“Yep.”
“We’re going on a vacation, Chris.”
“I know, Parker,” He grinned and cocked his head to the left, blond hair falling into his eyes. “I’ve already booked. We’re going to stay in Surfers Paradise in a place called Tiki Village, and we have to be there before five o’clock on January eighth.”
Before Parker could begin to articulate his displeasure at having everything booked and organized before he was even consulted, he found himself splashed with icy cold water. Looking down at his glass, a frog peered back up at him.
“Oh yeah,” Chris said lightly. “Stanley’s coming too, of course.”
Teeth gritted, Parker scowled at the frog. “Of course.”
And Stanley said, “Ribbet.”

I could just picture Chris trying to ride a motorcycle, and squinching up his eyes and freaking out each time. A very cute image, btw.
