Don’t worry. I’ll be here forever- I’ll never leave you. Trust me.

His feet hit the pavement, making wet slapping noises that were lost in the noise of the storm. Water dripped from his hair into his eyes and his clothing was soaked.

She’ll hurt you, Mano. She’s lying. In three years, she won’t be here, even if not by her own conscious choice. Please, brother, let her go before—

He shook his head, water flying everywhere, and fought the urge to shut his eyes. His fists clenched and the knuckles on his right hand hurt as badly as they had when he’d punched her. She never got to finish what she was going to say; he broke her jaw. And the worst part had been the few months later when he’d dared to visit her again and she’d completely forgiven him.

Joey? Joey, are you alright? Baby, please talk to me...

He stopped running as his own voice drifted through his head. He glanced around at the street where he stood, wondering how far he was from Karin’s house. Wondering what would happen to Joanne now. Wondering how long it would be before she started visiting him in his dreams. Wondering what could have happened if he’d fought harder, tried harder, made things work. But ifs weren’t going to help anything. So he turned and sat on the railing of the bridge, eyes closed. The sirens of the ambulance drifted closer, and he let out a shuddering sigh.

She was sprawled on the floor, arms at odd angles, a look of peace of her face and a potato peeler in her hand. He crouched beside her, ran his hands through her hair. Placed a single, lingering kiss on her lips and dialed nine-nine-nine.

He placed the memories in a box and locked them away.

It was time to stop fighting.

He fell backwards.
