Sunrise came over the ocean at half-past-five and burst through Wolfgang’s window. Water light reflections danced across his ceiling and walls, and the light bathed his room in a golden-red glow. He rolled over and reached out an arm, expecting to find Kailen’s warm back to which he could curl up against. It was quite a shock when he found himself in a single bed with no sign of his lover anywhere. A very big shock, actually. To put it simply— he panicked.
He ripped back the bedclothes, and ran down the stairs. He slid along the tiles and looked around the corner, then found himself in a kitchen. The walls were artistically splattered with blue, yellow and green paint. He blinked. At the table, two sets of eyes blinked back at him over mugs off coffee.
“Wolfgang, are you alright?”
He blinks again. “Yeah, I’m fine…”
“Oh, and we told everyone else where you were, so they wouldn’t worry. Was that okay?”
“Hmm? Oh, yeah…” He sighed and wandered over to take a seat next to his sister before burying his head in his arms.
So it was Monday morning, he’d walked out on his boyfriend and he was living with his sister.
He hated Mondays.
Tuesday
“So, today I have to go shopping, so if you need anything just ask Cate, okay?” She kissed his cheek and he scrunched his face in mock disgust. She laughed, “Oh, suck it up frog.”
His face dropped slightly and Karin frowned. “’M sorry Wolf. Shouldn’t have said that. But, I’ve really gotta go.” She adjusted her wig and pulled at the edge of her shirt. “Catie, are you sure I look alright without my chest bound.”
Cate rolled her eyes. “Kaz, I’ve told you more times than I can count; you look fine. Nothing like a certain Jason Jean, and so there is no way you’ll be attacked by rabid fangirls.”
Wolfgang smiled at the exchange and leant against the window frame. He wondered what Kailen was doing.
Wednesday
“Wow,” he breathes as he looks around the basement. “So this is where Karin stores her CD’s.”
“Yeah. Pretty stunning, isn’t it? But she just has so much music. CD’s, cassettes, even records… Everything she can get her hands on. She spends almost all her time in here tidying things up. It’s like some kind of secret library she’s got down here. It’s even organized in shelves and filing cabinets like the library archives at this place I used to go to in Jarra.”
“It’s amazing…” Cate smiles at him, he knows, even though he can’t see her. “Do you mind if I…?”
“No, no, go right ahead. There are various players down the back and there’s a few bookshelves next them. And a sofa. Stay in here as long as you like, I’ll bring you in lunch.”
So he nods and wanders around the shelves, still stunned into silence by the extensive collection. He finds a Wham album and suddenly the breath catches in his throat.
I love Wham! They’re one of my favourite bands, I’ve loved them since I was little. And George Michael is hot.
He grabs the CD and just stares at it for a while.
He finds a player, puts it in, presses play, and turns the volume up.
It’s loud enough that his sister-in-law doesn’t hear his sobs and he’s glad.
Thursday
Wolfgang spent the day by the fire, while the rain crashed down onto the roof and Cate burrowed into Karin’s side every time the thunder rolled. Even at ten in the morning, it was dark outside. Marshmallows were melted and shared and dropped into hot chocolates.
He wondered what Kailen was doing.
He wondered if it was raining in Yasic.
He wondered if Karin had any alcohol around.
And he wondered where his lucky socks were.
And if Kailen had done the washing on Monday…
Friday
“We,” Karin announced loudly as she adjusted her headband, “are going to Yasic. We’re going to go drinking with the rest of them. And you’re going to be coming.”
“Nuh-uh.”
“Yah-huh. If you don’t we’ll bring Fox home and let him cheer you up instead.”
“Eh?” Wolfgang paled. “That’s not fair, Karin!”
“Don’t care.”
And so it was that he ended up back in Yasic, a few blocks from his own house. He ordered a drink, he forgot what it was called a few moments later, but he was sure it had something to do with blue elephants, and settled down by the window to watch the rain. He could feel Alex and Fox’s eyes on him, but refused to turn and glare at them. As long as they didn’t try to come talk to him, he could put up with it.
This misery was self-inflicted, and he’d fix it himself, thank-you very much.
This was what he kept telling himself as he sipped his drink, alcohol burning down his throat and he was grateful as it tore away the pain, fragment by fragment.
Saturday
He plucked slowly at the guitar strings, not really focusing on what he was doing. A familiar tune drifted out, and he wondered idly if the acoustics would sound better if he went and played in the library-basement. Before he could decide whether or not it’s worth trying to find out, Cate sticks her head through the door, and smiles at him. “Go home kid, we all know you want to,” she tells him before retreating down the corridor. He blinks at the door, thoroughly confused, and then resumes playing. He gets halfway through his song when he stops and leaps from his seat, running for the stairs. He flies past his sister, who almost drops the mug of coffee she’s holding. “Wolfgang, where are off to in such a hurry?”
“Home!” He calls without turning around. “Kailen’s got my lucky socks, and I bet you he’s wearing them, the bastard!”
A moment later the door slams shut. Karin gets to twenty before he bursts back into the house and rushes past her again. “I’ll wait until morning, on second thought.”
As soon as the door clicks closed behind him, she bursts out laughing.
Before it was even nine in the morning, Wolfgang was gone. Karin was the one to check his bedroom, and relay the news to Cate, who merely smiled lazily at her over the mug of coffee in her hands. “I knew it. That’s… what, fifty dollars you owe me now?”
“Yeah, yeah, I know. I don’t know why I bothered making that bet with you.” She slid into the seat opposite, and slowly pulled Cate’s coffee over to her. “Our little frog does have a sense of duty to his princess.”
